In addition to his college teaching and master classes,
Fred has appeared in three highly regarded instructional videos for Homespun
Music Instruction: Classical Guitar: Technique
and Musicianship; Classical Guitar: Seven Easy Pieces, and Folk
Song Arrangements for Classical Guitar.
|
Fred
teaches exquisite guitar arrangements of four widely known and beloved
American folk songs: "The Water is Wide," "Wayfaring
Stranger," "Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair,"
and "We Are Climbing Jacob's Ladder." He shows how to
use lush chords, rich harmonies, and inventive improvisational elements
to make each song a beautiful and compelling performance piece.
Fred teaches full concert arrangements as well as easier alternate
versions for novice players.
A sample from the DVD, which includes a booklet
with music notation and tab is available at Homespun. |

In
this DVD, Fred explores the fundamental principles of classical
guitar technique, such as posture, relaxation, fingernail shaping,
and the correct application of the free and rest strokes. The 75-minute
DVD includes John Dowland's "Lady Hunnsden's Puffe," a
dance by Gaspar Sanz, and Hand's own "A Celtic Tale,"
"Heartsong" and "Lesley's Song."

with music notation and tab, is available at Homespun.
The DVD is also available as part of a two-DVD
set (with Seven Easy Pieces). |
The
seven works taught on this DVD are among the best-known student pieces.
Fred deconstructs each piece, pointing out possible trouble spots
and sharing tips on technique and interpretation. He demonstrates
ornamentation; slurs; rhythmic and melodic subtleties; timbral shadings;
and the importance of correct plucking strokes.

with music notation, is available at Homespun

The DVD is also available as part of a two-DVD
set (with Classical Guitar Techniques and
Muscianship). |
Fred
debuted his "Theme and Improvisation"at the "Guitarists
of the Big Apple" concert series sponsored by the New York
Guitar Seminar at Mannes in 2007. His performance was filmed by
